Isaiah 53

"Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows[a] that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
the sins of us all." v. 4- 6

This prophecy was fulfilled by the death of Jesus. How could an Old Testament person understand the idea of Christ dying for our sins - actually bearing the punishment that we deserved? The sacrifice suggested this, but it is one thing to kill a lamb, and something quit different to think of God's chosen servant as that Lamb. But God was pulling aside the curtain of time to let the people Isaiah's of day look ahead to the suffering of the future Messiah and the resulting forgiveness made available to all people!
